{We made it!}

Owen, Kaitlin & Max are back in Kirksville in one piece- whew!  I guess it would technically be three pieces…..and lots of luggage, but we made it back without any major issues. 

Zane is in his busy season right now, so Kaitlin thought she would go ahead come back to Kirksville for a bit a give him some time to really work and give her some company :-)    She didn’t think she could make the 4 hour drive by herself, so she rode with Zane to Ankeny and we took her from there.   Me, my mom & Lincoln (my mom was watching Lincoln for Allison) left Kirksville at 7:00 yesterday and made our way up to Ankeny.   We met Kaitlin & Zane at their new house (still under-construction) and got to see everything.  I just now realized I should have taken pictures :-(  It didn’t cross my mind because I was more worried about getting into their house with a toddler on my hip.  It was cold, wet & muddy….they have no driveway yet, just mud….you walk through their “yard” and then you reach the porch….which is really just a motte with super thin piece of plywood being used as a bridge.  You might also need to know that you need to climb over a 3 foot foundation wall, then step down onto the plywood bridge, then climb up another 3 feet to get into their front door. 

Entertaining to say the least. 

Their house is going to be super cute and their neighborhood looks like it’s full of kids.  Plus the drive is WAYYYYY better than the drive to Carroll.  Carroll= 4 hours and Ankeny= 2.5 hours. 

So after we saw the house, we loaded everything into my mom’s car and headed to Target.  Anytime my mom is in the vicinity of a Target….we have to go :-)  I should probably point out how hard it was to get Max to go to the back of the car.  Zane finally got him back there, but as soon as we got to Target….he hopped up front.   Side note- who would have EVER thought Mary Carol would let a dog in her car??? :-)  Anyway- on the way to Target, Kaitlin had decided the seating arrangement in the car had to be switched.  Owen needed to eat, my mom needed to use the restroom and I needed to move Lincon’s car seat to the back of the car….this is all why annoying Max refused to move and slobbered EVERYWHERE. 

I decided to draw some diagrams so you can visualize the twisting, turning and back-bend type manuevers Kaitlin & I were doing in the Target parking lot.  My mom has one of the newer, larger Yukon XL’s/Suburban type vehicles, so it’s not like we were short on space or anything…..another side note- My mom, Amanda & Todd and soon to be Allison and Andrew all have the same car, hahahahah!  My parents have a black Yukon XL, Amanda & Todd have a black Yukon XL and then Ali & Andrew getting ready to get a new car and it will more than likely be a black Yukon XL.   I’m sure we will look ridiculous on our way down to Seaside next summer :-)

Anyway- so yeah, we had a lot of space….but we also had a lot of stuff.

This is the seating arrangement that was not working for Kaitlin. Max kept going from back to front, back to front, back to front. She was blocked in with bags and Owen was crying because he was hungry.

So once we got to Target, my mom went in and used the restroom.  Then she came back out to the car and got Lincoln so that she could take him into the store while I moved the seats around and Kaitlin fed Owen.   This is when Max decides to hop up to the backseat and slobber all over the place.  Please note that the X’s represent bags on the floor and the dots represent Max’s nasty slobber.

So my mom get's Lincoln and they go into Target. Kaitlin get's Owen out of his carseat, hands him to me and climbs to the front seat so she can feed him. I then climb in the back and begin trying to move Lincon's carseat. I can't do it- Max's slobber is making me sick and I can't get the freaking dog to get in the back.

So we decide to switch and I'll feed Owen while she tries to ge Max to the back. I climb to the middle seats and take owen while she climbs to the back and proceeds to try and get max to the back. She yells at him, threatens him and then tell's him we're leaving him at Target. :-)

I decide to just fix the seat with Max crowding my space. Owen decided it was a good time to go #2, so I give him back to Kaitiln and she changes him the seat. I climb to the back and fix the seat while Max slobbers on my back. DISGUSTING!!!

This is when my mom shows up with Lincoln.  It’s freezing outside, the wind is blowing and we tell her she has to wait because there’s no room.  We’re so nice :-)  She tosses Lincoln in the front of the car while I finish his seat, Kaitlin finishes getting Owen changed and my mom is running diapers to the trash can.  Then some ladies walk by and started talking to my mom.  All of sudden, the back door of the car starts to open and these ladies are just grinning ear to ear.  What were they so excited to see???  Not the super cute newborn baby or the adorable little 18 month old….they wanted to see THE DOG.  Are you kidding me??  They had seen us wrestling around and thought they saw a dog in the car, so they asked my mom about it and wanted to know if they could see him because he looked cute.   So Max get’s the attention he’s been begging for and the ladies finally leave after barely giving any acknowledgment to the babies. 

Kaitlin hand's Owen to me because she can't get him into his car seat with the angle she's stuck in . Max continues to slobber on me- I'm officially done with that dog for the day.

After we get Owen in and Lincoln's seat is ready to go....we find out Lincoln need's his diaper changed. Kaitlin change's Lincoln's diaper while I try to get a towel under Max....who, by the way, still refuses to move and continues to slobber like a teething baby.

We finally get all the babies in their seats, diapers thrown out and towel under the dog. Now we just need to move some bags to the back.

FINALLY we get situated. We had plans of going somewhere for lunch where we could sit down and visit. At this point we said “screw it!”, drove through Wendy’s and hit the road :-) hahahaha!

So we’re here, we made it :-)

Guess what today is!?!?!?  ASH WEDNESDAY…….and so begins the “giving up”  and no meat….on certain days…… 

I’ve decided to give up french fries.  I know, I know….what a dumb thing to give up.  I like french fries and it’s not like I eat them a lot, but anytime I grab something or go eat somewhere and I have the option of getting fries, I usually do.   So maybe this will break me of my “occasional french fries” habit :-)

To kick of the Lent Season- I’ve decided to post one of my favorite Jim Gaffigan clips about being catholic and since it’s nice to have something to look at while you listen, I’m posting it with some pictures of Owen.  HAPPY LENT!!!!

  1. Thanks for posting this! I appreciated it on many levels! I so understand how kids (and dogs) make seemingly simple plans sooo much more complicated. Any time people ask us out to eat nowadays we have to weigh the different factors…has kai napped, pooped, etc. recently? Will he do it there? Will he throw a fit etc etc! Kids are defenately the most precious gift…but they make you learn to love the calling in an order somewhere and bringing it home option! I’m glad you all made it back in one (or several I guess) piece(s).

    Commenting on your mom letting a dog in her car – don’t you know that was a small price to pay to have Owen and Kaitlin home for a visit??? Oh, the things we do for time with our kids and grandkids (and it’s all worth it).
