I’ve tried to get this shot with every newborn I encounter. 

 

I could never get it to work because,  1- I would give up too quickly because I felt like I was freaking out the parents, 2- The parents would give up right away when they saw what we had to do to get that shot or 3- the baby just wasn’t having it.   

So I searched and searched and thought and thought on how to do that picture.  how did other photographers get it??  was it just luck??  did it depend on the baby??  etc.  

Well, long story short…we needed something that was squared off, solid and served as somewhat of a ledge to rest the baby’s elbows on.  

We searched Andy’s house just looking for something…anything that would work.   Enter my sister Allison with a recipe box….”perfect!”  I exclaimed.  

Yes, that is correct.  We used a recipe box to prop up little Baylor’s head.  Don’t worry, we covered it with padding and it was nice and cushy.   So… I needed a lot of help with this picture.  I needed someone to hold up the blanket behind Baylor & I needed someone to lift his head up when I was ready and then move their hands really quickly.  Andy decided he would hold up the blanket…or something like that 

 

So here we go, take one: 

Lift, lift, lift!

 

anddddd didn't work. bummer

 

This is when I realized I need a third person.  I needed someone to push in Baylor’s arms & elbows while the other person lifted his head up to rest on his hands.  Then they had to let go at the same time and move their hands away super super quickly.  

Here we go, take two:  (any future newborn shoot clients, do not be alarmed.  Baylor was not hurt in any way during this picture.  In fact, he slept through the whole thing)

OK! LET GO!

 

OH MY GOSH I THINK WE GOT IT!! MOVE YOUR HAND!!!

 

This is when the room erupted in cheers and “get it, get it, get it!”  and “yayyyy!!”  AND I FINALLY GOT IT!!!!!  

 

Little Baylor held his head up like a champ for about 5 seconds….and then it was done.  

 

Oh man it was a very happy moment.  The house was nuts and full of people, toddlers running around, a baby crawling all over the place, guys watching basketball and me taking up a massive section of the living room for pictures.  Everyone cheered with me and Jackson even gave me a high five :-)  

Here’s a picture that Autumn got of her poor baby boy sleeping through this traumatic event. 

 

That’s right!  It took Kaitlin holding up the blanket (you can see her hands), Andy pushing in the arms and Allison lifting the head.  

Nuts!  But this is nothing new for my family.  They drop everything anytime i ask them for help in a shoot.  Allison actually went to Wal-Mart last time I was in Kirksville and got me feathers because I had left mine in St. Louis.  My mom always lets me use the house for shoots and she’s usually running around cleaning up my messes as I go.  Anytime I need an assistant last-minute someone is always willing to go with me.   Seriously, they do anything and they don’t have to.  They could very well just tell me no.   I’m very blessed to have such a great family.  THANKS GUYS!!   You all get free pictures for life and fun little gifts & surprises that I come up with every now and then.  

Plus I love your kids more than my luggage and I’m always willing to watch them for you  :-)

  3. Hi Aunt Carol,
    So sorry about Mondays with Bella but I am on spring break this week. Bella and I spent Monday and Tuesday hanging out with Baby Baylor and his family. He is toooooo sweet! I’m sure Bella’s Monday was pretty entertaining but I didn’t see her much. Briley and her kept themselves entertained doing all sorts of silly stuff! But not to worry. Lissy, Bella and I are headed to the zoo this morning with some of our childhood friends and another little guy. Two of us are pregnant with toddlers in hand so there should be plenty of entertaining photos and stories today!
